Roewe is a Chinese automotive brand under the ownership of SAIC Motor since 2006. Initially, Roewe vehicles were developed using technology acquired from the now-defunct British carmaker MG Rover. Due to the inability to purchase the rights to the Rover brand name, which had passed through various hands including BMW, Ford, and Jaguar Land Rover, SAIC established the Roewe marque as a substitute. As a result, Roewe cars are marketed in international markets outside China under the MG brand. The name Roewe is derived from SAIC's unsuccessful attempt to secure the Rover brand name from BMW. This move led to the creation of the Roewe brand to continue the production and sale of vehicles based on the acquired technology from MG Rover. SA
