The Suzuki Fronte, introduced in March 1962, was initially a sedan version of the Suzulight Van. The vehicle's nameplate lasted through various Kei car sedans and commercial-use variations until it was succeeded by the Alto in September 1988. The name "Fronte" was chosen to signify the car's front-wheel-drive layout, later also symbolizing Suzuki's aspiration to lead in the Kei car segment even when some models had rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive setups. Derived from the Suzulight Van, the TLA Fronte debuted as a passenger car version of the popular light van. The Suzulight Fronte was developed from the earlier Suzulight SS series, which was inspired by the Lloyd LP400
