The Matra Rancho, a leisure activity vehicle designed by the French engineering group Matra in collaboration with automaker Simca, was introduced in 1977 to tap into the growing off-road vehicle trend, inspired by the Range Rover. Offering a rugged "off-road look" at a more affordable price point, the Rancho quickly gained popularity among consumers. However, the success of the Rancho did not mitigate the challenges faced by Chrysler Europe, the parent company of Simca. In 1978, Chrysler sold its European operations to PSA Group, leading to the rebranding of the Matra-Simca Rancho as the Talbot Matra Rancho in 1979.
