Toyota Celica A50

1978 – 1981

The Toyota Celica, produced by Toyota from 1970 to 2006, was a versatile automobile offered in various body styles across seven generations. The name "Celica" is derived from the Latin word coelica, meaning "heavenly" or "celestial". The Celica was primarily sold through the Toyota Corolla Store dealer chain in Japan. One notable feature of the Celica was its range of four-cylinder engines, which provided power across the different iterations of the car. The body styles available included convertibles, liftbacks, coupés, and notchback coupés, catering to a diverse range of preferences among consumers. A significant development in the Celica's history occurred in 1973 when Toyota introduced the term "liftback" to describe the Celica fastback hatchback model. This unique design feature was particularly emphasized in the North American market with the introduction of the Liftback GT variant, highlighting the vehicle's innovative styling and practicality. Overall, the Toyota Celica's legacy was characterized by its sporty yet practical design, reliable performance from its four-cylinder engines, and a range of body styles that appealed to a wide audience. The Celica remains a classic and iconic model in Toyota's history, symbolizing a blend of style, performance, and functionality that resonated with automotive enthusiasts worldwide.
