Volkswagen Transporter T4

1990 – 2003 · GERMANY

The Volkswagen Transporter (T4), known as the Volkswagen EuroVan in North America, was a van produced by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles between 1990 and 2004. It replaced the Volkswagen Type 2 (T3) and was succeeded by the Volkswagen Transporter (T5). The T4 was a significant model for Volkswagen as it was their first van with a front-mounted, water-cooled engine. The history of the T4 dates back to the late 1970s when Volkswagen considered switching from the rear-engined, air-cooled layout of the T2 to a front-engined, water-cooled design. However, the decision was postponed in 1980 with the introduction of the rear-engined T3. It wasn't until 1990 that Volkswagen finally introduced the front-engined T4. Key Points: 1. The Volkswagen Transporter (T4) was produced from 1990 to 2004 as the successor to the Volkswagen Type 2 (T3). 2. It was marketed as the Volkswagen EuroVan in North America. 3. The T4 was Volkswagen's first van to feature a front-mounted, water-cooled engine, a departure from the traditional rear-engined, air-cooled layout. 4. The decision to adopt a front-engined design was delayed from the late 1970s until the T4's introduction in 1990. 5. The T4 played a crucial role in modernizing Volkswagen's van lineup and setting
