The Volkswagen Type 3 first generation ran from 1961 to 1973 and represented the company's effort to offer a more practical, slightly larger alternative to the Beetle while retaining the core air-cooled rear-engine formula. The range was initially marketed as the 1500, later expanding to include 1600 variants, with the Type 3 Fastback 1600 among the most recognizable body styles offered. A key engineering feature was the flattened "suitcase" engine layout, which allowed a front luggage compartment in addition to the rear storage area above the engine, giving the car genuine dual-trunk practicality unusual for a rear-engined design. The Type 3 also became notable as one of the first Volkswagen models to receive fuel injection as an option, with Bosch D-Jetronic available on certain 1600 variants in later production years.
