ZiS

ZiS, short for Zavod imeni Stalina (Factory named after Stalin), was a Soviet state automobile and truck manufacturer based in Moscow, operating under that name from 1931 until 1956, when it was renamed ZiL following Khrushchev's de-Stalinization campaign. The factory itself had earlier roots as AMO, established in 1916, and was later reorganized and renamed to honor Stalin at the height of his political dominance. ZiS became known almost exclusively for producing large, heavily built luxury limousines and official state vehicles reserved for Soviet government use, with production volumes kept deliberately low and access tightly controlled. The ZiS 101, introduced in 1936, was a full-size limousine broadly inspired by American designs of the period, while the ZiS 110, produced from 1945, served as the primary state car through the postwar Stalin era and drew clear stylistic influence from the Packard 180. The ZiS name ceased with the factory's renaming to ZiL, under which brand production of prestige government vehicles continued for decades.
