The Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 is one of those vehicles that gets under your skin. Rugged, handsome, and surprisingly capable, it sits in a sweet spot between genuine off-roader and comfortable daily driver. I owned one for about two years, a used example with around 60,000 kilometres on the clock and a V6 petrol under the hood. It was out of warranty, which meant every creak, rattle, and unexpected noise sent a small shiver down my spine. But here is the thing - that Jeep never actually let me down. Not once.
So was all that worry for nothing? Probably, yes. Let me break it down properly.
The Good
Interior Quality and Comfort
Step inside the WK2 and you are immediately greeted by a cabin that feels genuinely solid. This is not a truck interior full of hollow plastics that flex under your fingertips. The centre console, the switchgear, the door trims - everything has a satisfying heft to it. I never once felt like I was going to snap a switch or crack a panel, which is saying something because I was not exactly gentle with it.
The seats deserve a special mention. Comfortable on long drives and equipped with heating, which on cold winter mornings is an absolute luxury. Getting into a warm seat on a freezing day never gets old. It is one of those small things that genuinely improves your daily life.

The boot space is another highlight. It is genuinely cavernous. Whether you are loading up for a weekend away or doing a big grocery run, the Grand Cherokee swallows it all without complaint. Practicality like this is part of what makes it such a great daily driver.
Exterior Design - Properly Tough
Let's be honest - the Grand Cherokee WK2 is one of the best looking SUVs out there. There is nothing soft or apologetic about its styling. It looks purposeful, strong, and unmistakably masculine without being cartoonish about it. Wide haunches, a bold front end, and proportions that just work.

And backing up the looks with some substance - I took mine off-road on more than a few occasions. Brushed against trees, scraped through scrub, the usual stuff. Every time I thought I had done some damage, a closer look revealed nothing that a light buff could not sort out. The bodywork proved surprisingly resilient for a daily that also moonlights as a trail truck.
Off-Road and General Capability
I gave this car a proper beating at times and it never felt stressed or out of its depth. The WK2 has real off-road credentials and it shows. There is a confidence to the way it handles rough terrain that makes you trust it, even when the going gets genuinely tricky.

For a vehicle that weighs as much as it does, it is impressively composed on most surfaces. Day to day driving is relaxed and effortless, and that big body soaks up road imperfections with ease.
The Bad
Brakes That Feel Undersized for the Job
The one area where I had a consistent gripe was the brakes. On long, steep descents the stopping power felt a little underwhelming for the sheer mass of the vehicle. It never felt truly dangerous, but it did require more forward planning and earlier braking than you might expect. For a car this size and weight, you want brakes that inspire confidence on the way down a mountain, and these did not always deliver that.
The Noises - Oh, the Noises
This is the one that really tested my nerves. Owning an out-of-warranty used car is already a minor psychological challenge, and the WK2 did not make it easier. The V6 petrol sometimes sounded alarmingly like a diesel - a deep, clattery, almost agricultural tone that had no business coming from a petrol engine. You learn to live with it, but early on it absolutely freaked me out.
Then there were the gearbox and differential noises. Occasional clunks, groans, and mechanical sounds that arrived unannounced and sent me straight to the internet looking for horror stories. As it turned out, the car continued to run perfectly and nothing ever actually broke. But the anxiety those sounds created was real. If you are the kind of person who cannot handle mystery mechanical sounds, just know that the WK2 makes some of them, especially as it ages.
The Verdict
Two years with the Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 and I would do it all again without hesitation. Yes, buying a used, out-of-warranty example comes with its share of nervous moments - and this car certainly delivers those. But underneath the occasional bizarre noise is a genuinely capable, comfortable, and seriously good-looking SUV that can handle a beating and keep showing up for work every day.
The interior quality is better than many rivals. The boot space is excellent. The heated seats are a winter essential. The exterior looks like it means business. And off-road, it backs up every bit of that tough aesthetic with real-world ability.
Five stars from me. Flawed? Sure. Forgettable? Absolutely not. And now I am dreaming about stepping up to an SRT or a Trackhawk, because once the Grand Cherokee gets into your blood, there is no easy way out.
