The Austin Maestro was a five-door hatchback small family car introduced by British Leyland in November 1982 as a replacement for the Austin Maxi and Allegro models, with a van derivative also produced. Production continued under Rover Group until December 1994, with a total of 605,000 units sold. The car was manufactured at the former Morris plant in Oxford, also known as Cowley. Today, the same factory produces the BMW Mini. Key points: 1. Austin Maestro: A five-door hatchback small family car produced from 1982 to 1994. 2. Production: Initially by British Leyland and later by Rover Group. 3. Sales: A total of 605,000 units were sold during its production run. 4. Manufacturing: Produced at the former Morris plant in Oxford, now used to build the BMW Mini. 5. MG Maestro: An MG-branded performance version was sold from 1983 to 1991. 6. Rover Maestro: While later models were sometimes referred to as the Rover Maestro, the car never donned the Rover badge. The Austin Maestro represented British Leyland's effort to revamp its small family car offerings and fill the gap left by older models like the Maxi and Allegro. The introduction of the MG Maestro added a sportier variant to the lineup. Although later iterations carried the Rover name, the model itself was never officially badged as a Rover.
