The Austin Maestro, a five-door hatchback small family car, was introduced by British Leyland in 1982 to replace the Austin Maxi and Austin Allegro. Production continued under the ownership of Rover Group until 1994, with a total of 605,000 units produced. The van version also replaced the Morris Ital derivative.
