Austin Princess I

1947 – 1950 · Great Britain

The Austin Montego was a British family car that was in production from 1984 to 1995 under British Leyland and later Rover Group. It was designed to replace the Morris Ital and Austin Ambassador to compete with popular models like the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier. Key Points: 1. The Austin Montego was introduced by British Leyland in 1984 as a replacement for the Morris Ital and Austin Ambassador ranges. 2. It was available as both an Austin and an MG at launch, marking the end of the Austin brand after 1988. 3. The Montego was part of project LC10, originating as a four-door notchback model meant to succeed the Morris Marina and Princess ranges. 4. Development on the Montego began in 1977, but the car was not launched until seven years later due to delays. 5. The Morris Marina was updated and rebranded as the Morris Ital in 1980, while the Princess was refreshed as the Austin Ambassador in 1982. Overall, the Austin Montego served as a significant entry in the British family car market, offering a fresh design and technology to compete with key rivals of its time.
