The Austin Montego was a British family car manufactured by British Leyland from 1984 to 1988, and then by Rover Group from 1988 to 1995. It was designed as a replacement for the Morris Ital and Austin Ambassador models to compete with cars like the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier. Initially launched under both the Austin and MG marques, the Montego was later sold without a brand following the phasing out of the Austin name in 1988. Development of the Montego, which was based on project LC10, began in 1977 with the aim of replacing the Morris Marina and Princess ranges by the early 1980s. However, the car was not introduced until seven years later as the Marina was updated and rebranded as the Morris Ital in 1980, while the Princess became the Austin Ambassador in 1982.
