The BMW 02 Series was a line of sporty compact executive cars manufactured by BMW from 1966 to 1977. These cars were based on a shortened version of the New Class Sedans. The first model introduced in the series was the 1600-2, later renamed the 1602, in 1966. Designed to cater to a market seeking a smaller, more affordable two-door option, the 02 Series was the brainchild of BMW's corporate design director Wilhelm Hofmeister, who entrusted the project to Georg Bertram and Manfred Rennen. The result was a stylish and athletic car that was 5 cm (2 in) shorter in wheelbase and about 25 cm (10 in) shorter in length
