The E60 M5 5.0 SMG pairs the S85 5.0-litre V10 engine, producing 507 hp and 520 Nm of torque, with BMW's seven-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox, which operates as an automated single-clutch unit with paddle-shift control. Rear-wheel drive and a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 4.8 seconds place it firmly in sports sedan territory despite the wagon body configuration, which expanded the M5's practicality for markets where the Touring variant was offered. The SMG transmission drew polarised responses from enthusiasts for its abrupt low-speed behaviour but delivered fast, precise shifts at higher rpm.
