The BMW X3 is a luxury SUV that has been in production since 2003 and is now in its third generation. It is based on the BMW 3 Series platform and marketed by BMW as a Sports Activity Vehicle under its X-line of luxury vehicles. The first-generation X3 was a collaboration between BMW and Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, where all X3s were manufactured under contract to BMW. The second-generation X3 was produced at BMW's Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, USA. In the third generation, production of the X3 expanded to BMW South Africa's Rosslyn plant, alongside the Spartanburg facility, after a significant upgrade to the Rosslyn plant, which took over production from the long-running 3 Series.
