The Chevrolet Cavalier is a compact car line produced by Chevrolet, serving as the successor to the Chevrolet Monza. It was the second Chevrolet model to feature front-wheel drive and was part of the GM J platform. The J platform was a global platform created for various North American GM divisions, including Chevrolet, as well as for international models like Opel and Vauxhall. There have been three versions of the Cavalier sold so far. The first comprised three generations sold in North America from 1982 to 2005. The second version was produced by SAIC-GM for the Chinese market from 2016 to 2021. The third version, produced by SAIC-GM for the Mexican market, has been in production since the 2019 model year. Being a part of the GM J platform and one of General Motors' early "world cars," the Cavalier was designed for cross-market use across various GM divisions globally. This approach allowed for higher efficiency in design, engineering, and production, streamlining the manufacturing process for GM. The Cavalier's long production history and various market versions show its adaptability to different regions and consumer preferences, making it a versatile and successful compact car within the Chevrolet lineup.
