The Chevrolet Sail, originally known as the Buick Sail in China, is a subcompact car manufactured by SAIC-GM, a joint venture between General Motors. Initially introduced in 2001 as the Buick Sail, the vehicle was crafted in sedan and wagon models based on the Opel Corsa B platform. Upon the Chevrolet brand's resurgence in China in 2005, the car underwent a facelift and rebranding as the "Chevrolet Sail" and "Sail SRV." A significant redesign of the Sail took place in 2010, with SAIC-GM taking the lead in the development process. This newer version featured sedan and hatchback variants, aimed at enhancing the vehicle's appeal to consumers. Subsequently, exports of the Chevrolet Sail commenced in countries such as Chile and Peru. Moreover, assembly operations began in Ecuador and other emerging markets in North Africa and the Middle East. By 2013, production of the Chevrolet Sail expanded to Colombia, where GM Colmotores in Bogotá started manufacturing the vehicle to cater to both domestic and regional demands.
