Chevrolet, often known as Chevy, is an American car division under General Motors (GM). Established on November 3, 1911, by Louis Chevrolet, Arthur Chevrolet, and William C. Durant, the Chevrolet Motor Car Company was utilized by Durant to secure a controlling interest in GM through a reverse merger in 1918. Durant reclaimed his position as GM president before being ousted again in 1919. Alfred Sloan then selected Chevrolet to be the flagship brand within GM, adopting the philosophy of "a car for every purse and purpose". This strategy propelled Chevrolet to surpass Ford's Model T as the best-selling car in the U.S. by 1929 with the Chevrolet International model.
