Commer, a British automotive manufacturer founded in 1905, was originally known for producing a diverse range of commercial vehicles including trucks, buses, and military vehicles. The brand emerged from Commercial Cars Limited, which made its mark with the first Commer Cars truck, a three-ton RC type, in 1907. Commer was integrated into the Rootes Group following its acquisition by Humber in 1926, which led to an expansion and evolution of its vehicle lineup through significant industrial synergy. Throughout its history, Commer was notable for innovation, particularly with the introduction of the Rootes TS3 engine in 1954. This engine was a two-stroke, horizontally opposed piston engine, earning the nickname "Commer Knocker" due to its distinctive sound. However, the later years of Commer were marked by several changes in ownership, which influenced its production strategies and the vehicles it offered. The brand underwent significant transitions when it was acquired by the Chrysler Corporation in the late 1960s, leading to a phase-out of the Commer name in favor of Chrysler and subsequently Dodge branding, especially after Peugeot took over Chrysler Europe in 1978. By 1979, the Commer brand was discontinued, concluding its manufacturing under the ownership of Chrysler, with some of its facilities transitioning to produce Renault trucks. Today, Commer vehicles, especially vintage models, hold a nostalgic value and are appreciated in classic automotive circles for their unique contributions to commercial vehicle manufacturing during their time.
