The vehicle was officially showcased in March 2020 as a full-fledged production model after its initial debut was delayed due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic that led to the cancellation of the 2020 Geneva Motor Show. At the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, a nearly final concept version of the Formentor was displayed. Its nomenclature pays homage to the Formentor peninsula situated on the Spanish island of Mallorca.
