DB

1938 – 1961 · France

The DB car brand, formally known as Deutsch-Bonnet, is a storied marque that carved a unique niche in automotive history, particularly known for its lightweight and aerodynamically efficient sports cars. Founded in 1938 by Charles Deutsch and René Bonnet in Champigny-sur-Marne, France, the brand initially made a name for itself with innovations and racing successes, particularly at prestigious events like Le Mans. DB cars were distinctive for their use of Panhard mechanical components, and their vehicles were often celebrated for achieving impressive performance from modest engine sizes, thanks to superior aerodynamics and lightweight construction. This formula led to multiple class victories at Le Mans, showcasing the brand's engineering prowess. Despite their success on the track, DB faced challenges in mass car production, mainly due to disagreements over design and mechanical direction. This discord eventually led to the dissolution of the partnership in 1961. Charles Deutsch went on to establish his own firm, while René Bonnet founded Automobiles René Bonnet, which later became part of Matra Automobiles. Today, the legacy of DB is a testament to the innovative spirit of its founders and their significant contributions to automotive racing and design during their operational years. The marque remains a respected name among classic racing enthusiasts, particularly for those who appreciate the blend of French engineering and competitive spirit that DB cars represented.
