De Dion-Bouton, established in 1883 by the visionary Comte Albert de Dion along with Georges Bouton and Charles Trépardoux, swiftly carved a niche in automotive history with its pioneering designs. Originally captivated by steam-powered vehicles, the brand produced one of its first motor cars for the 1887 Paris to Versailles run, marking a nascent moment in auto racing history. The company's transformative shift to internal combustion came after Trépardoux left in 1894, allowing de Dion and Bouton to innovate further. Their creation of a high-speed, lightweight internal combustion engine in 1895 revolutionized the automobile and motorcycle industries, ushering in a new era of motor vehicle production. By 1900, De Dion-Bouton was celebrated as the world's largest automobile manufacturer, influencing a wide array of future industry leaders and licensing its engines to over 150 other manufacturers. Despite their technological advancements and early dominance, the 20th century brought challenges. The brand struggled to maintain its innovative streak, particularly after World War I, and eventually ceased car production in 1932. The company lingered on in the production of trucks and other vehicles until the early 1950s, marking the end of an era for one of the automotive world's early pioneers.
