The Ford Escape is a compact crossover SUV introduced by Ford Motor Company in 2001, making it the first Ford SUV based on a car platform. Positioned smaller than the Ford Explorer and positioned between the Ford EcoSport and Ford Edge, it has been a popular choice among consumers. The 2004 Ford Escape Hybrid marked Ford's foray into hybrid-electric vehicles and was one of the first hybrids in the SUV segment. The first two generations of the Escape were built on the Ford CD2 platform, developed in collaboration with Mazda, which also led to the creation of the Mazda Tribute and Mercury Mariner. The Escape, Tribute, and Mariner were all available in North America. In Europe, the Escape was initially sold as the Ford Maverick from 2001 to 2008, replacing a Nissan-produced SUV. To streamline production and design efforts, Ford implemented a "One Ford" strategy in the mid-2000s. This strategy led to the unification of the Escape's third and fourth-generation designs with the Ford Kuga, a model developed by Ford of Europe. This move aimed to achieve consistency and efficiency across different markets while offering a competitive and appealing SUV option to customers worldwide. The Ford Escape has evolved over the years to incorporate hybrid technology and has remained a strong contender in the compact crossover SUV segment.
