The Ford GT40 was originally developed by Ford in the 1960s as part of the "Ford GT" project to compete in long-distance sports car races against Scuderia Ferrari. Designed with high-performance in mind, the GT40 featured a powerful 4.7-liter "289" V8 mid-engined layout. A limited number of around 100 vehicles were produced, with some being sold to private teams and others as road-legal Mk.III models.
Racing activities for the GT40 began in 1964, and Ford achieved remarkable success in the World Championships categories from 1966 to 1968. The iconic victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans came in 1966 with the 7.0-liter
