FSM, short for Fabryka Samochodów Małolitrażowych, is a storied Polish automobile manufacturer that has played a pivotal role in the country's automotive history. Originating from a joint Polish-Italian venture, FSM was established in Bielsko-Biała in the late 1970s. The brand is famously known for producing the Polski Fiat 126p, a car that became an emblem of Polish automotive culture due to its affordability and compact design, fitting the needs of Polish families during its production era from 1973 to 2000. The Polski Fiat 126p, often affectionately called "Maluch," meaning "little one" in Polish, encapsulates FSM's philosophy of producing reliable, economical vehicles for the masses. It wasn't just a car but a cultural icon that mobilized an entire nation, with over 3.3 million units rolling off the assembly lines. Today, FSM's influence has waned as newer, more modern car manufacturers have taken the forefront in the automotive industry. The company's operations have significantly scaled down since its heyday, and it no longer produces vehicles. However, the legacy of FSM and its contribution to the automotive world, especially in Central and Eastern Europe, continues to be remembered by car enthusiasts and historians alike.
