Glas, a German automotive brand founded by Hans Glas, began its journey in Dingolfing, originally as a manufacturer of farm machinery before venturing into motor scooters and eventually automobiles. Glas's foray into the automotive industry was marked by the introduction of the Goggomobil in 1955, a compact car that became iconic for its size and practicality in post-war Germany. The company's ambition grew, and by the 1960s, Glas had introduced a range of more sophisticated models, including the Glas 1300 GT and 1700 GT designed by the renowned Italian stylist Pietro Frua. These models were known for their sleek, sporty designs and were a significant departure from the small, economical cars that had initially defined the brand. The GT models, particularly, were celebrated for their performance and aesthetics, aiming to compete with the likes of MG and Fiat sports cars. However, Glas struggled financially due to the high costs of producing such high-quality vehicles and limited production capacity. In 1966, BMW acquired Glas, largely attracted by the brand's innovative use of a timing belt with an overhead camshaft, a pioneering advancement at the time. Post-acquisition, BMW phased out the Glas brand, incorporating some of its engineering prowess and rebranding existing models, like the Glas 1700 sedan, which continued in South Africa as the BMW 1800 SA until 1974. Today, the legacy of Glas lives on primarily through the enthusiasts of classic cars, celebrating the innovative spirit and design excellence that defined the Glas marque during its brief but impactful existence in the automotive world.
