The Jeep Cherokee is a popular line of sport utility vehicles (SUV) manufactured by Jeep over five generations since late 1973 by American Motors Corporation (AMC). Initially marketed as a variant of the Jeep Wagoneer (SJ), the Cherokee has gone through various changes to its size and design, transitioning from a full-size SUV to one of the first compact SUVs and ultimately evolving into a crossover SUV. The name "Cherokee" pays tribute to the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans. The first-generation Cherokee (SJ; 1974) was essentially a reintroduction of a two-door body style of the Jeep Wagoneer, featuring a redesigned greenhouse with a broad D-pillar and a long fixed rear side window that had an optional flip-out section. In February 2023, production of the Cherokee line came to an end, with the Cherokee nameplate transitioning to designate the Grand Cherokee and its extended version, the Grand Cherokee L.
