The Jeep Cherokee is a popular line of sport utility vehicles (SUVs) that has undergone significant evolution through five generations. Initially introduced as a variant of the Jeep Wagoneer (SJ), the Cherokee has transitioned from a full-size SUV to being one of the pioneering compact SUVs and ultimately into its most recent generation as a crossover SUV. Named after the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans, the Cherokee has been in production in some form since the early 1970s, with American Motors Corporation first introducing the nameplate in 1973. The Cherokee's latest generation was discontinued in February 2023, with the nameplate now exclusively used for models like the Grand Cherokee and its extended version, the Grand Cherokee L. The Cherokee's history
