Kiira Motors Corporation, heralded as Uganda's beacon in the automotive industry, began its journey in 2007 when a team from Makerere University was invited to join an MIT-led consortium. This experience birthed the creation of Africa's first electric vehicle, the Kiira EV, launched in 2011. Founded by visionary leaders like Prof. Sandy Stevens Tickodri-Togboa and Mr. Paul Isaac Musasizi, Kiira Motors embodies the spirit of innovation and resilience. The Kiira EV, a battery-electric vehicle, marked a significant milestone in Uganda's automotive history and set the stage for further innovative projects such as the Kiira EV Smack and the Kayoola Solar Bus. These ventures underscored the company's commitment to green mobility and sustainable transportation solutions. Today, Kiira Motors is advancing towards the completion of the Kiira Vehicle Plant, which is expected to significantly boost local manufacturing capabilities and job creation. The plant aims to produce thousands of vehicles annually, focusing on electric vehicles to reduce urban air pollution in Uganda. Despite facing challenges typical of pioneering enterprises, Kiira Motors continues to push forward, integrating local materials and talent into its production processes to redefine transportation in Africa.
