Melkus, a distinctive name in automotive history, is renowned for its roots in racing and a unique blend of engineering ingenuity and design flair. Established in 1959 by Heinz Melkus, a revered racing driver and coach, this East German marque carved a niche with its innovative approach to sports cars during an era of rigid automotive standards behind the Iron Curtain. The brand's hallmark model, the Melkus RS 1000, introduced in 1969, became an icon of lightweight design, sporting a fiberglass body and the heart of a Wartburg engine, a rarity in performance vehicles of its time. Despite the fall of the Berlin Wall and the subsequent shifts in the automotive industry, Melkus faced significant challenges, leading to its cessation in the early 1990s. However, the brand experienced a revival in 2006 under Peter Melkus, the founder's son, reflecting a blend of tradition and modernity with the introduction of the Melkus RS 2000. Despite these efforts, the company struggled to sustain itself, eventually declaring bankruptcy in 2012.
