The Austin Montego is a British family car produced by British Leyland from 1984 to 1988, and then by Rover Group from 1988 to 1995. It replaced the Morris Ital and Austin Ambassador ranges, aiming to compete with the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier. Initially launched as both an Austin and an MG, it was the last car under the Austin marque, transitioning to be sold without a marque in 1988. The Montego began as a four-door notchback variant of project LC10, with development starting in 1977 to succeed the Morris Marina and Princess ranges by the early 1980s. However, delays meant the car was launched seven years later, with interim updates to the Marina
