National Motor Vehicle Company

1900 – 1911 · USA

The National Motor Vehicle Company, founded in Indianapolis in 1900, carved its niche early in automotive history with innovations and achievements that set the pace for future manufacturers. Spearheaded by Arthur C. Newby, one of the visionaries behind the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, National quickly distinguished itself not just as a manufacturer of quality automobiles but as a competitor in the very races that would come to define American motorsport. National’s first notable production, the electric runabout introduced in 1900, demonstrated the company's dedication to technological advancement. However, it was the shift to gasoline-powered vehicles that marked their true entry into automotive prominence. By 1910, National was producing cars that not only won races but were known for their durability and performance, capturing the prestigious Indianapolis 500 in 1912. Today, while the National Motor Vehicle Company no longer operates, its legacy endures in the vintage collector’s market. Enthusiasts and historians alike celebrate National’s vehicles for their innovation and pivotal role in the early days of automotive engineering. The brand's journey from a pioneering startup to a beloved classic encapsulates a proud, albeit concluded, chapter in automotive history.
