NSU

NSU, a pioneering force in the automotive world, traces its origins to Germany in 1873, initially starting as a manufacturer of knitting machines before pivoting to bicycles and eventually, motor vehicles. Founded by Christian Schmidt and Heinrich Stoll, NSU quickly distinguished itself through innovation and quality engineering. By 1905, NSU had ventured into the automotive industry, debuting its first car, the 6/10 PS – a model that symbolized the brand’s commitment to robust engineering and design. The company’s journey through the 20th century was marked by significant achievements, including setting multiple motorcycle speed records and developing the NSU Ro 80 in the 1960s – a vehicle celebrated for its revolutionary rotary Wankel engine and futuristic aesthetics. However, financial challenges and the complexities of the rotary engine led to NSU merging with Auto Union in 1969, which was later absorbed by Audi. Today, NSU’s legacy lives on primarily through its historical contributions to automotive technology and design. The brand is no longer active, but its innovative spirit is echoed in the models and engineering practices of modern Audi vehicles, reflecting a lasting impact on the automotive industry that transcends its time as an independent entity.
