Oldsmobile Cutlass 5th Gen

1981 – 1997 · USA

The Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera was a mid-size car produced by Oldsmobile Division of General Motors from 1982 to 1996. Available in various body styles including a 2-door coupe, 4-door sedan, and a 4-door wagon, the Cutlass Ciera was part of a line-up that shared the front-wheel-drive A platform with the Buick Century, Pontiac 6000, and Chevrolet Celebrity. One of the key features of the Cutlass Ciera and its platform twins was the MacPherson strut front suspension, body-color urethane bumpers, flush-mounted glass, front-wheel drive, and on many models, fuel injection. The A-bodies, including the Cutlass Ciera, became emblematic of badge engineering within General Motors, symbolizing genericized uniformity. This was highlighted in a 1983 Fortune magazine cover story, which spotlighted the lack of distinction between the different models, prompting GM to refocus on design innovation. The Cutlass Ciera's production spanned a single generation and was known for its reliability and practicality. Its popularity among consumers was a testament to its design elements and performance within its segment. Throughout its production run, the Cutlass Ciera maintained a loyal customer base and garnered a reputation as a dependable mid-size car option. In summary, the Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera, along with its A-Body platform siblings, exemplified badge engineering within GM, prompting a reevaluation of design
