The Overland Automobile company, founded in 1903 by Claude E. Cox in Terre Haute, Indiana, marked its entry into the burgeoning auto industry with a distinctive gasoline runabout. This early model set Overland apart by featuring a water-cooled single-cylinder engine—a notable innovation at the time. Overland quickly established itself under Cox's leadership, gaining significant traction after moving production to Indianapolis. In a pivotal turn of events in 1908, John North Willys purchased control of the company. Under Willys, the brand experienced rapid growth, cementing its reputation with robust, affordable cars that appealed to a broad American audience. By 1912, Overland had evolved into the second-best selling American car brand, rivaled only by Ford. Despite facing severe financial challenges, including a receivership in the 1930s, the company rebounded with new models and strategic reorganizations. Post-World War II, the company, then known as Willys-Overland, did not resume passenger car production but instead focused on the Jeep, which had gained fame during the war. Today, the legacy of Overland endures through the Jeep brand, particularly in the Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland model, symbolizing the enduring spirit and resilience of a once-dominant name in American automotive history.
