Paramount Cars, a niche British automotive manufacturer, made its mark between 1950 and 1956. Founded by WA Hudson and S Underwood in Derbyshire, the brand commenced operations in Swadlincote before transitioning to Melbourne and finally to Leighton Buzzard. Their product line consisted mainly of two models: the Paramount Ten and the Paramount 1½-Litre. The early vehicles, characterized by an aluminum body on a wood frame, bore a stylistic resemblance to the BMW with their distinctive grilles, and initially aimed to incorporate Alvis mechanicals. However, cost-cutting measures led to the adoption of more affordable Ford components, including the 1172 cc side valve engines from the Ford 10 model, which, despite being fitted with twin SU carburettors, underperformed in terms of power. In 1953, the company saw a change in ownership, with Camden Motors stepping in. The manufacturing moved to Leighton Buzzard, introducing a version equipped with a 1508 cc Ford Consul engine, and an optional supercharger for added power. However, the Paramount cars remained a relatively rare sight on the roads, with production wrapping up after just about 70 units, due to their steep pricing and limited appeal. Despite its brief venture, Paramount Cars showcased a blend of ambition and traditional British car-making, leaving behind a legacy that, while small, remains a fascinating chapter in automotive history.
