The third generation Pontiac Firebird was introduced in 1981 alongside the Chevrolet Camaro for the 1982 model year. These models were significant as they were the first Firebirds with several new features, including factory fuel injection, automatic and manual transmissions, four-cylinder engines, 16-inch wheels, and hatchback bodies. In 1982, the third-generation Firebird lineup included three models: the base Firebird, the luxury Firebird S/E, and the high-performance Firebird Trans Am.
