The Reliable Dayton Motor Car Company, founded by William O. Dayton in 1906 in Chicago, Illinois, epitomizes a brief yet notable chapter in automotive history. Known for manufacturing high wheelers, this brand was part of the early automotive scene, producing vehicles with unique rope drives and solid rubber tires. Their cars, including the surrey and coupe models, featured engines under the seat, initially using two-stroke twin-cylinder engines before transitioning to four-stroke variants. Despite its pioneering spirit, Reliable Dayton ceased operations in 1909, its facilities subsequently used by the Fal-Car company. This early automotive venture, although short-lived, contributed distinctively to the nascent motor industry in the United States.
