The Renault Safrane is an executive car developed by French manufacturer Renault from 1992 to 2000. Positioned in the executive (E-segment) category in Europe, the Safrane was renowned for being the most luxurious and expensive model in Renault’s lineup during its production period. However, despite its high-end positioning, the car did not achieve significant commercial success compared to similar models and its predecessor, the Renault 25. With just over 300,000 units produced, the Safrane fell short of the nearly 800,000 units of the Renault 25. Following the discontinuation of the Safrane in 2000, it was succeeded by the Vel Satis and to some extent by the short-lived two-door Avantime. The Vel Satis aimed to cater to the executive segment that the Safrane had targeted, but the new model did not attain the same level of popularity. The Avantime, with its distinct design and coupe-like appearance, offered a unique alternative but was only in production for a brief period. In 2008, Renault reintroduced the Safrane name with a new model, which was based directly on the Renault Samsung SM5 sedan. This revamped Safrane maintained the executive car status and continued to target a niche market.
