The Subaru Forester is a compact crossover SUV that has been manufactured by Subaru since 1997. It was introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show in November 1995 as the Streega concept and was available for sale in Japan in February 1997, later expanding to the US market in 1997. The Forester was one of the first crossover SUVs and was inspired by Volkswagen. The first generation of the Forester (SF; 1997) was built on the platform of the Impreza, resembling a taller station wagon. This styling continued into the second generation, whereas the third generation and onwards shifted towards a crossover SUV design.
