The Subaru Outback is a popular nameplate used by Japanese automaker Subaru for two SUV-themed vehicles: the Outback (1994–present) and the Outback Sport (1994–2011). The Outback is a Legacy-derived crossover station wagon, while the Outback Sport is an Impreza-derived off-road themed hatchback. Most versions of the Outback come with all-wheel drive as standard equipment. The original Outback was developed from the second-generation Subaru Legacy wagon. The first-generation Legacy, introduced in 1989, did not initially have the modifications for the Outback variant. However, Subaru offered an Outdoor option package for the 1994 Legacy L all-wheel drive model, adding features like a height-adjustable suspension, luggage rack, skidplate, and mud flaps. Earlier, the Subaru Leone had a raised-roof "Touring Wagon" variant in the late 1980s.
