The Subaru Outback is a popular nameplate used by Japanese automaker Subaru for two types of SUV-themed vehicles: the Outback, which is a Legacy-derived crossover station wagon, and the Outback Sport, an Impreza-derived off-road themed hatchback. Most versions of the Outback wagon and Outback Sport come equipped with all-wheel drive as standard. The original Outback station wagon was derived from the second-generation Subaru Legacy. It initially appeared in 1989 and did not have the same cosmetic and suspension modifications as the later Outback version. However, an "Outdoor" option package was offered for the 1994 model year Legacy L all-wheel drive model, which included features like compressed air strut height adjustable suspension, a luggage rack, a skidplate, and mud flaps.
