The Subaru Rex, also known by various names in different export markets, was a kei class automobile produced by Subaru from 1972 to 1992. Initially intended for the Japanese market, the Rex was also sold in Europe, South America, Australia, and the Caribbean. The Rex succeeded the R-2 as Subaru's kei car and was available in both commercial and passenger car versions. Throughout its production run, the Rex underwent significant updates in 1976, fall of 1981, and late 1986. The second generation of the Rex, produced from 1981 to 1986, served as the foundation for the larger Subaru Justy. The name "Rex" is derived from the Latin word for "king
