The Subaru Sambar is a cabover truck and microvan manufactured and sold by Subaru as Japan's second truck complying with the strict Keitora vehicle tax class, following the Kurogane Baby. Initially launched in 1961 as a microvan and Kei pickup, the Sambar is currently in its eighth generation, with the sixth generation onwards being a rebadged version of the Daihatsu Hijet. Across its iterations, the Sambar has maintained a rear engine, rear-wheel-drive layout with a body-on-frame construction rather than unibody. The earliest models featured an air-cooled engine from the Subaru 360, switching to water-cooled engines from later Subaru models like the Rex, Vivio, and Pleo.
