Sunbeam, a venerable name in the annals of British automotive history, was founded by John Marston, a man whose industrious nature and dedication to quality first manifested in the bicycle industry. Marston's foray into automobile manufacturing began in 1901, following his successful bicycle business under the Sunbeam name—a brand originally suggested by his wife Ellen for its connotations of radiance and quality. The official formation of the Sunbeam Motor Car Company occurred in 1905, signaling a new era of luxury automotive production. The company's inaugural model, the Sunbeam 12/16, was praised for its reliability and quality, setting the standard for subsequent models. Over the next few decades, under the leadership of figures like Louis Coatalen, Sunbeam distinguished itself not only in luxury car production but also in motor racing, enhancing its reputation through technological innovations and competitive success. Notably, Sunbeam's foray into racing led to record-breaking achievements, including Henry Segrave's historic victories in the French Grand Prix and the setting of land speed records with cars like the Sunbeam 350HP.
