UMM

Founded in 1977 in Lisbon, Portugal, UMM (União Metalo-Mecânica) quickly carved a niche for itself with its rugged and durable vehicles, primarily designed for off-road and utility purposes. The brainchild of two visionary entrepreneurs, the brand drew on Portugal's industrial capabilities to create something robust yet uniquely appealing. UMM's initial offering, the UMM Alter, was a testament to simplicity and functionality. Originally derived from a French military prototype, the Cournil, the Alter became synonymous with resilience, featuring prominently in harsh terrains and challenging environments. It wasn't just a vehicle; it was a workhorse for farmers, military units, and adventure enthusiasts alike. Today, UMM's legacy is somewhat mixed. While the company ceased mainstream production in the early 1990s, its vehicles remain cult favorites among off-road aficionados. The durability of UMM’s designs ensures that many of its vehicles are still in use, a testament to the brand’s engineering prowess. Despite no longer producing new models, UMM’s impact on the off-road community and its role in the automotive history of Portugal continue to be celebrated by those who cherish tough, dependable transport.
