The Vauxhall Astra is a compact car/small family car (C-segment) manufactured by Vauxhall since 1980, with production primarily taking place at Vauxhall's plant in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, England. Initially, the Astra nameplate was used for right-hand drive versions of the Opel Kadett in the UK. In 1991, Opel started utilizing the Astra name for its B/C-platform models. General Motors' Saturn division in the US also sold a version of the Astra as a captive import until the discontinuation of Saturn post-GM's 2010 bankruptcy. The first generation of the Vauxhall Astra, produced between 1980 and 1984, derived its name from the Vauxhall-badged version of the front-wheel drive Opel Kadett D.
