The Volkswagen Citi Golf is a right-hand drive 5-door hatchback that was manufactured and sold by Volkswagen in South Africa from 1984 to 2009. It was essentially a facelifted version of the popular first-generation Volkswagen Golf Mk1, with production continuing after the Mk1 ceased production in Germany in 1983. The original Golf Mk1, first introduced in 1974, had been a huge success due to its simplicity, fuel efficiency, and low maintenance costs. In response to the demand for a small, affordable entry-level car in South Africa, Volkswagen decided to continue production of the Mk1 as the Citi Golf, even after introducing the larger and pricier Golf Mk2 in 1984.
