Volkswagen Beetle 1st Gen

The first-generation Volkswagen Beetle, produced from 1938 through 2003, is the original Type 1 that established the model's entire legacy and served as the direct predecessor to the later New Beetle. Built around a rear-mounted, air-cooled flat-four engine paired with a rear-wheel-drive layout, the car was engineered from the outset by Ferdinand Porsche for simplicity, durability, and low running costs. Production spanned decades and multiple continents, with the final units rolling out of Volkswagen's Puebla, Mexico plant, making it one of the longest-running single body designs in automotive history. Its rounded bodywork, split or oval rear window on early examples, and platform-mounted construction became benchmarks that the later New Beetle would deliberately reference as a styling homage rather than a mechanical continuation.
