For a city of its size, Adelaide punches well above its weight on car events. The world's largest closed-road rally, one of the largest historic motoring runs anywhere, a Supercars street race through the parklands, and a motorsport festival that puts Formula One cars back on the old Grand Prix circuit. Most of it happens between October and November, so plan the spring now.

Adelaide Rally (October)
The Adelaide Rally, formerly Classic Adelaide, is the world's largest closed-road tarmac rally. For three days in October, closed stages through the Adelaide Hills and the city host everything from competition classes to the non-competitive touring runs that let ordinary enthusiasts drive their own cars on closed roads with a co-driver. The best spectator days are the Street Party on King William Road in Unley, where the field parks up for an evening, the Strathalbyn town stage where the cars run through the main street, and the North Adelaide finale.

Bay to Birdwood (October)
One Sunday a year, more than a thousand historic vehicles leave West Beach in the morning and drive in convoy through the suburbs and up into the hills to the National Motor Museum at Birdwood. It has run since 1980, it is one of the largest continuous historic motoring events in the world, and the spectator experience is free: pick a spot on the route, bring a chair, and watch seventy years of motoring go past. At Birdwood the cars park up on the museum grounds for the afternoon.

Adelaide Auto Expo (November)
The state's biggest indoor and outdoor car show, at the Adelaide Showground in Wayville over a November weekend. Hundreds of display cars and bikes across the pavilions, trade stands, and a Saturday morning cars and coffee on the lawns in front of the Jubilee Pavilion that is open to anyone who wants to bring their own car along.

Supercars Adelaide Grand Final (late November)
The Supercars Championship ends its season on the Adelaide street circuit, the parklands track that hosted the Formula One Grand Prix from 1985 to 1995 and the Adelaide 500 for two decades after. Four days of racing, support categories, the pit lane and the concerts, opened by a parade of the cars through Victoria Square earlier in the week. It is the biggest single motorsport weekend in the state and the city fills up, so book anything that needs booking early.

Adelaide Motorsport Festival (autumn)
Each year Victoria Park, the Pakapakanthi section of the old Grand Prix circuit, hosts a festival of motorsport history: Formula One cars from the Adelaide Grand Prix era, historic touring cars, sports cars and motorcycles running demonstration laps on a 1.6 kilometre section of the original track, with the paddock open to walk through. If you want to stand next to a running V10 Formula One car, this is the day.

Tough Car Adelaide Festival (November)
Australia's street machine and tough street car scene gathers in Adelaide in late November for a festival of show cars, burnouts and drag-style action. If your taste runs to blown V8s and tubbed rears rather than concours lawns, this is the weekend.

The Bend: the whole spring calendar
The Bend Motorsport Park at Tailem Bend, an hour east of the city, has become the state's motorsport home. In October alone it hosts the Historic Touring Cars at The Bend Classic with a ute muster alongside, the Street Machine Drag Challenge and the SPRY Spring Nationals, and its Lunch and Laps days let you drive your own road car on the circuit behind a pace car and eat at the restaurant afterwards. The one-make days
Adelaide's club scene means most marques get a day of their own. All Datsun Day fills the Birdwood museum grounds in October, All Morris Day runs at Ridleyton in September, the Monaro Nationals come to Mount Barker, and the Tri Five Nationals put every 1955 to 1957 Chevrolet in the state on the foreshore at Semaphore in November. Each one is a small show with a big turnout of exactly one kind of car, which is its own pleasure.
